Risk Guide

Risk – the classic board game

As the days get shorter, the desire for an exciting game night with friends or in the family grows. One of the games that people like to pick up on such occasions is Risk. This game may rightly be counted among the top classics, because it was already developed in the early 1950s. It was invented by the Frenchman Albert Lamorisse, who actually earned his living as a film director. The first version he brought out in 1955 and called the game ‚The Conquest of the World‘. Later, the game was revised by a game expert. The new version was simply called ‚risk‘ and under that name it became one of the favorites of many board games lovers.

At first glance, one might think that it is primarily about the simulation of a warlike conflict. The players have the task to conquer certain continents or countries. Achieving the goal requires strategic skill and a good deal of luck in dice. In the standard version, the continents are shown with the respective countries on the game board.

Around risk At least two players are required to play, more than six players can not participate. The game is suitable for players of all ages. The minimum age is 12 years. In the classic version of the game, there is a game board in the box showing the continents and countries. In addition, stones in six different colors are needed, representing the armies of the players. What the players have to do in detail, they learn through the country and task cards. To increase the appeal of the game, there are two wild cards. Dice with three red and three blue dice. Plan a little more time for your game night, because the 90 minutes of playing time, which are specified in the booklet, can usually not be kept. But that should not be a problem, because the risk game is a lot of fun.

The course of the game

First, the country maps are distributed among the players. Unfortunately, with four or five participants not all participants get the same number. Each participant gets army stones in one color. There are three types of army stones. They symbolize one, five or ten armies. If a player’s turn, he gets a task card. It may mean, for example, that he must drive out all armies of a particular color or conquer certain lands. Then players place their armies in the countries whose country cards they have drawn. Now begins the phase of the fight. The players try to conquer certain territories. In addition, the cubes are used. By comparing the number of points is determined who has to clear the field. In order to secure a certain area, at least one army should always remain there.

It all sounds more complicated than it actually is. The learning of the rules does not take long and after a short time each player knows exactly what he has to do.

Variants of the game

Over the decades, there have been some minor changes to the rules. There are also regional differences when it comes to marking the different territories. Later, various games were developed that have a different name, but are based on the same game idea. These include games like Lord of the Rings, Rome, Star Wars or Game of Thrones. In part, these games have added more characters that are not available in the original version. Because of the variety of thematic variants and versions, ‚risk‘ is also an object for collectors.
