Label printers are used to print labels for packages, letters, CDs, DVDs, name tags and items.
Modern label printers cut the labels automatically, so that cumbersome cutting out of an A4 sheet (as would be the case with a normal printer) is no longer necessary.
Label printers are available in three sizes. The widest printers can print labels up to 108 mm. The usual dimension is between 14 and 56 mm. The smallest label printers are designed for lettering from 4 – 24 mm.

Best Label PrinterThe problem of correct labelling and the writing of shipping labels is a tedious task, especially in everyday office life. In the past, office workers were often condemned to print labels on an A4 sheet and cut them out manually. These times have long since become history, as there are good label printers who can take on such tasks. The selection of label printers is relatively large. The price range also extends from 30 euros to over 400 euros. Certainly not every office or small company needs a professional label printer from Zebra Industries. Usually, most users also get along with an inexpensive model from Brother, Epson or Samsung. So that you really know what’s important when buying a label printer, we would like to provide you with all the essential information about these printers in our guide to the label printer comparison 2018.

1. what is a label printer?

Label printers belong to the labeling equipment group. They are considerably smaller than normal printers and can print small pieces of paper from 6 – 108 mm wide. You can quickly and easily print name tags or other labels and labels. Most of the models from our label printer comparison have relatively good software for the PC, which allows to print company logos in good quality on the labels. Some models also have a network connection. This can be guaranteed by a LAN or WLAN connection. The latter also has the advantage that smartphones can access the printer. You can therefore order shipping labels quickly and easily from your mobile phone.

Most label printers can use an endless label roll. This means that the length of the individual labels is not limited. For this reason, most users prefer label printers to normal printers. The flexibility of the creation itself is much greater.

The Pros and Cons of a label printer

The advantages and disadvantages of a label printer compared to an inkjet or laser printer

pros

  • fast and easy printing
  • automatic cutting
  • Individual adjustment of the length

Cons

  • can only create labels and receipts
  • cost-intensive thermal paper is used
  • no colour printing possible

How a label printer works

Label printers are not simple inkjet or laser printers. In most cases, a print head is used to write on heat-sensitive thermal paper. Thanks to this printing system, the printers can be built very small and compact. They usually have no ribbon and can only write in one color on thermal paper. This allows a quick and clean print, but can turn yellow after half a year and become unreadable.

In direct thermal printing, thermosensitive paper is used, which blackens when heated. The print head heats the area with the selected characters. The print-outs are usually single-coloured and grey shades can only be reproduced in raster. In rare cases, dichromatic paper with two different colours that also respond to different temperatures is used.

The first low-cost direct thermal printers were used for fax machines. This system is now widely used for labels, vouchers and tickets. It has been shown that the printers print much faster and cleaner than laser and inkjet printers at a similar speed.

label printers: Buying Guide

Thermal printers are now available from various manufacturers. In addition to the major brands such as Epson, Toshiba, Brother, Dymo and Zebra Industries, there are also some no-name products on the market. In our label printer comparison 2018, it has been shown that special attention should be paid to technical details such as resolution, print width, print speed and connections. Of course, it does not matter whether you buy your label printer online or at a specialist electronics store. Buying in a retail store such as Saturn or Media Markt has the advantage of allowing you to take a closer look at the printer. When buying online, the selection of label printers is considerably larger. While the specialist stores usually only have models from Brother or Dyma in stock, you can also find models from Zebra Industries on the Internet.

The resolution of a label printer

Resolution plays an important role in a printer. A distinction is made between 200,300 and 600 dpi for label printers. Our label printer comparison showed that devices with 600 dpi perform best in readability. Especially for creating barcodes we recommend models with 600 dpi. The print quality of 200 and 300 dpi printers is much poorer. However, it can be sufficient for simple tasks (creating package labels). Our label printer comparison winner reached 600 dpi without any problems. The far cheaper price-performance winner had only 300 dpi. A video will show you the differences in detail.

The Printing width

The use of this technology also plays an important role for the printing width. Normally label printers with a width of 14 – 58 mm are required. It can be used to create labels for CDs, DVDs and packages. For name badges, models with 6 – 14 mm are usually used. Printers with a printing width of 108 mm are mainly used for receipts. They occur only in very rare cases and are therefore mentioned only marginally in our label printer comparison.

Printing speed

The printing speed is given in millimeters per second. As most label printers use rolls of thermal paper, the default setting is mm/sec. The fastest models, such as Brother’s comparative label printer winner, achieve 150 mm/second. Cheaper machines, such as Brother’s value-for-money winner, only achieve 90 mm/second.

The connections

The connections are always very important for printers. All devices compared showed a USB port. There were the usual differences in speed between USB 1.0 – 3.0, and the most practical ones are label printers with a network connection. They have either a LAN or WLAN interface. Our label printer comparison winner can even be operated from a smartphone and turns out to be a real work relief.

Useful extras

Nowadays, label printers should no longer only be able to produce simple labels. Barcodes are becoming increasingly popular and are intended to simplify everyday working life in shops and hospitals. Some technology freaks also dream of a well-assorted household with bar codes that can capture all items. This extra can therefore be a real enrichment. The quality of the barcodes in comparison was also good, so that all models can be used as barcode printers.
