A real classic that has lost none of its excitement and fun to date is darts. The throwing game is not only popular in bars and pubs. Even in domestic hobby rooms, the glass pane invites you to new variations of play. In our Best Electronic Dart Board report 2018 there are the best models for hobby athletes or families.

Best Electronic Dart BoardWhat is a dartboard?

There is a clear standard for dart boards, so that there is a uniform playing field not only in professional sports. The round disc, also known as the board, has twenty squares with different scores. The centre is called Bullseye and has the highest score of 50. The circle around it, the single bull, stands for 25 points. There are two more circles on the disc, which run through all fields. The inner one stands for the triple, which scores three times the score. The outermost circle of a dartboard is the doubles for double the score. The other squares that are narrower inwards give the normal score between one and twenty. The**clockwise distribution** is as follows:

20 – 1 – 18 – 4- 13 – 6 – 10 – 15 – 2 – 17 – 3 – 19 – 7 – 16 – 8 – 11 – 14 – 9 – 12 – 5

How is darts played?

Skill and precision as well as good coordination between eyes and hand are required to be successful with darts. In short: The darts have to be placed on the target. The different fields in different shapes, sizes and colours stand for different scores. There are different variations of the game, all of which can be played on the same disc. This makes darts especially interesting and versatile and gives beginners the opportunity to try out different styles.

301 or 501

Each player starts with a score of 301 or 501 and tries to reduce it to zero. In each round, three throws are available and the number of scores of the fields hit is deducted from the total. The highlight is that the zero must be reached exactly. If more points are scored than the player still has, the entire round is void. The Double Out version is very popular. This means that to reach zero a double field must be hit. Correspondingly there are also other outputs, where Straight Out stands for any field. On slot machines, there are sometimes 701 starting points.

Tactics or cricket

Three hits in the same fields are decisive for winning. The numbers from 10 to 20, triples, doubles and the bull must be taken three times to complete the**list**. For special fields such as the Bullseye, a double hit applies, as well as three hits as three singles, a single and a double or a triple. There are additional points if fields are hit repeatedly and the opponents have not yet eliminated them from their list. Progress is recorded on a board or on paper. A slash is used as the character for a hit, an X is used for two hits, and a circle around the X is used for three hits. This way, all players always have an overview of the current game progress.

Blind killer

The draw procedure determines the course of the game. The numbers between one and twenty are written on notes and mixed. Each player draws a number and keeps it for himself, while three to four more numbers are drawn blind. All other notes are revealed and the numbers remaining in the game are noted on a blackboard. Depending on the number of participants, eight to twelve dashes are placed behind it. Throwing is now about hitting the drawn numbers. Correspondingly, the lines behind it are removed. If there are no more strokes or lives left, the number and thus the player who drew them is eliminated from the game. Since the numbers have been distributed anonymously and there are simply put aside notes, there is no guarantee to eliminate certain comrades-in-arms. On the contrary, it can also be a**strategy** to aim at one’s own paragraph in between in order to protect it from other attacks. If you drop out, you don’t go any further and the last one left is the winner.

hitman

Another variation is to give life to the other players. A participant then selects an arbitrary field. This must be hit by all within a round, that is, with three darts, because otherwise one life will be lost. If you hit the field, you give the next one and then set the corresponding round. The selection is also made with a dart design and is therefore rather random, depending on the talent for throwing. According to the confirmation rule, the last player with life must confirm his last thrown field again to win. However, this is optional and will be agreed between the participants beforehand.

fox hunt

Fox hunting is available for two players. The fox starts at 18, the hunter at 20 and so begins the hunt. The fox has three throws each to reach the next field by a hit on his current number. Clockwise the numbers 20,18,4,13 etc. follow. The hunter proceeds accordingly, but starts at 20 and must therefore try to catch the fox. The hunted man wins when he returns to his starting number. The stalker wins when he lands on the field where the fox is up to date.

round the clock

Also played in a circle is Around the clock. The numbers are thrown in chronological order, whereby you can skip the next number when you hit a double and even skip two digits when you hit a triple. The winner must reach 20 first. There is also the variant that counts down from 20 to 1.

Shanghai

The Shanghai variation, which is available in several editions, is very diverse. Popular is the dropping of numbers from 1 to 9 in sequence. Three darts are available to hit the number or reach the corresponding bonus factors. For example, if a triple is scored three times, the score can be nine times higher. Shanghai is reached when a single, a double and a triple of the current number is scored.

Especially for advanced throwers there are many more variations where very precise fields have to be hit. But especially beginners can have just as much fun and practice with the simpler games. It is important to define the rules of the variations before the beginning and to agree with your fellow musicians. It can also be advantageous to record the current points or the game progress on paper or a board. This way, no misunderstandings or questions arise.

How does a dartboard work?

The basic functionality is the same for every dartboard. The arrow is thrown and then gets stuck in the field. The basic material can influence the result, as natural materials in particular wear out with frequent play. This may have a negative effect on target accuracy.

Electronic dartboards work with other technical recognition systems. Modern variants such as the popular Wild Bull machines also register arrows that would fall out or not get stuck. The aim is to imitate the authentic feeling of darts when throwing on classic boards and thus enable a particularly precise game. Cameras can also be used to identify players, allowing them to continue playing their best scores and more at various slots. Just as competitions with participants from all over the world are possible. An ingenious laser system also monitors the distances from the player to the throwing line and specifies the standardized dimensions. In addition, a function can be activated for competitions that punishes violations.

Advantages, application areas and structure at a glance

Unlike classics like billiards, ping-pong and the like, Darts is very beginner-friendly. Complete starter sets are relatively inexpensive and offer extensive possibilities for playing. Installation is also very simple and does not require much space. On the other hand, the expansion possibilities are enormous if you have developed a lot of enjoyment in sport.

As an integral part of many pubs and pubs, dartboards are an ideal addition to local party cellars, hobby rooms and the like, but boards can also be installed in other places such as the garage or in inner courtyards. If they are hung on a nail, they can be quickly removed or hung up again if necessary, even when the game is played. This makes them a good spontaneous entertainment at celebrations.

Dartboard types

The two big differences in the darts game are between analog and electronic boards. The first one is filled with arrows with steel point. Usually sisal is used, but other variations also work with cork and co. Depending on the material it can lead to different signs of wear and tear and more. Natural materials such as cork are cheap and light, but can be badly affected by frequent use.

As the steel darts get stuck deep in the material, depending on the thickness of the throw, they can fray when pulled out. This clouds the gaming experience in the long run. The first purchase is inexpensive and therefore ideal for beginners. In addition, all game variations can be tried out.

Electronic dartboards are used with special Soft Darts with plastic tip. They are very harmless and often quieter than traditional darts. The points are also counted automatically. On the other hand, errors can also occur, especially with less expensive devices. In addition, fewer game modes are often possible. The tips of the projectiles also need to be replaced more quickly, although some manufacturers supply replacements immediately.
