General information about routers

A router is an electronically powered and hand-operated Toolfor machining of various materials, in particular wood. The tool is attached to the workpiece from above.
routerss are suitable for a variety of applications. In addition to the freehand milling of, for example, ornaments, fonts and patterns can be a router be used for milling, for stencil milling and profiling and chamfering. The router is used for free-hand milling from above onto the workpiece and guided by hand.

About the construction of routers

The drive is at a router given by a usually gearless electric motor. The speed of the electric motor is 8,000 to 30,000 revolutions per minute. Other components of one router are a collet chuck used to clamp the milling tool and a milling basket with a stroke between 35 mm and 80 mm, which is guided by two columns. These guide columns are fixed by a stable base plate, which can be provided with a replaceable sliding surface made of plastic or with a sliding coating. For milling circles or circle segments with a single curve stop, it is also possible to attach stops and guides in various designs to the base plate.
Basically, two different basic designs are distinguished by routers.
Some older devices usually have a motor with connecting cable, which is pushed into a milling basket. In these devices, the electrical connection is made with sliding contacts on the motor and on the milling basket. The on / off switch is located on the handles of the milling basket. The so-called Eurohals machines are equipped with a 43 mm Euro neck and are clamped separable into the milling basket.
Most modern routers have the milling basket connected to the motor.
routerss with a capacity of 450 watts and more are suitable for use in the DIY sector. Professional routers do a lot more, here around 900 to 1,200 watts are common. The strongest hand routers can have a power of up to 2,600 watts. Due to the high weight of up to eight kg, these are only suitable for processing hardwood or for use in stationary operation.

Clamping range and handle shapes

In conventional routers, the clamping range of a collet is specified as six mm to 12.7 mm. Usual sizes are six mm, eight mm and twelve mm. In some applications, the sizes are still four mm and ten mm. The clamping range is specified for machines in the Anglo-American area and for small tools in inches. Collets in which the diameter is smaller than six mm are used only in small routers. Larger and thus stronger machines work with eight and twelve mm collets.
Less common are stationary routers. They can be found integrated in machining centers or in portal milling machines.
The classical form of a handle of a router is the double knob. For two-handed operation, the router has round handles on both sides. One-handed operation is possible with the pistol grip. Each on the opposite side is a knob. Most ergonomic is the double handle. This is also intended for operation with both hands. With him it is much more comfortable to work in the main working direction. However, it is much more complicated to guide the router from another direction.

Various types of milling cutters

There are a wide variety of routers for routers, all of which are suitable for different requirements. The following are some conventional milling types.
Rectangular recesses, also called grooves, are realized with a groove cutter. This shape can be achieved by various forms of groove cutters. A spiral groove cutter produces the best milling pattern. A chamfer cutter mills semicircular grooves or fillets on the edges of the workpiece. Respectively, a circular milling cutter rounds off the edges of the workpiece. If parts or splinters are glued to a workpiece, a trimming cutter is suitable for face milling of the surface. A stop ring below and above the cutting edges of the router enables a flat surface. These cutters are often offered with a cutting tip to dive into the wood without an additional step in making copies of a tool using a pantograph. Other profile cutters include, for example, the rebate cutter, the burr cutter and the tine cutter.
