Men’s hiking raincoats guide

Anyone who travels a lot in nature should always have one slickerin the backpackto have. But what are the characteristics of a good jacket? Of course, it should be waterproof and keep moisture from the outside. But only breathable materials reliably dissipate the moisture from inside the jacket. We’ve put together some tips for you to look out for when buying a men’s hiking rain jacket.

What are the differences between hard and soft shell?

Anyone interested in a hiking rain jacket is already at the beginning of an important decision: Should it be a hardshell or Softshell jacketbe? We have summarized the most important differences for you:

Softshell rain jackets are uncomplicated all-rounders. They are soft, elastic and offer great freedom of movement. Under the windproof and water-repellent outer material, they are provided with a warming inside. They are very breathable and provide valuable services, especially during strenuous activities. However, a softshell jacket, in contrast to the hardshell only water-repellent, not waterproof. In strong continuous rain, the wearer is therefore not sufficiently protected from moisture penetration. Three-layer softshell jackets have an additional no-wind membrane. However, these models are not 100 percent waterproof either.

The Hard shell jacketOn the other hand, it is completely waterproof and does not allow anything to penetrate from outside, even in heavy rain. In addition, a powerful membrane ensures that the sweat can escape as water vapor. This process works the better, the greater the temperature difference between the inside and the outside. At higher temperatures, however, the membrane of the hardshell jacket loses its breathable properties.

Hardshell jackets are available in two or three layers. The outer material is made of robust material that is tear and abrasion resistant and also impregnated with dirt and water. Underneath lies the functional membrane. It is firmly connected to the outer fabric. While in a two-layer jacket, a mesh lining protects the membrane, a lining is incorporated in the three-layer jacket. The 2.5-layer hardshell replaces the inner lining with a fine coating that protects the membrane.

Which jacket is optimal for hiking?

Which rain jacket is ideal for your hike depends on the field of application. Walks in continuous rain or in the alpine area should be started with a hardshell jacket. It is clearly superior to softshell for all-weather protection. It is also durable and sturdy. The two-layer jacket is lighter and more breathable. The three-layer jacket scores especially in winter. Many models even have a removable snow skirt. If you wear a heavy backpack, you should also pay attention to the weight and pack size of the selected jacket. Often every gram counts.

Softshell jackets offer greater comfort, especially during exercise-intensive hikes. They are lightweight and retain their breathability even at higher outside temperatures. Due to the lining, they also have a warming function in cool temperatures. However, anyone who is confronted with continuous rain on a day trip will quickly reach their limits with a softshell.

What qualities does a hiking rain jacket need for men?

Whether you go on a forest hike or a mountain hike, the choice of the optimal rain jacket will certainly influence. But there are a few general features to look out for when buying a rain jacket.

In addition to weight and pack size in backpacking, the durability is an important factor. There are models that are equipped for intense tours with reinforcements on the sleeves, shoulders and hips. If you wear a heavy trekking backpack, you will benefit from this equipment. Pay attention to the hood for easy adjustment. A jacket with ventilation zips under the armpits transports sweat much faster. And if you’re on the high alpine terrain every now and then, a removable snow guard will certainly appreciate it.
