Guitar string guide

General to the guitar string

Basically, all strings sets combine strings of different manufacturing and texture. In most cases, the acoustic guitars and electric guitars have in common that their bass strings are wrapped. Thick sets of strings are often only used when the G string is wound. Those who value bending or single-tone lines should opt for smooth strings, as this provides the typical and popular sound. On the string packs are smooth strings with the suffix „p“, which stands for plain, the English word for „smooth“. If the strings are wound, ie „wounded“, they are marked accordingly with a „w“. Smooth strings are usually drawn from steel, which is ideally tinned in addition. This is done to protect against corrosion. Bass strings, however, consist of an iron or steel core, which is often hexagonal and tinned. In addition, he is wrapped with a round and thin wire. For the „post-treatment“ of the different windings, there are three different types. It can be unpolished, roundwound, halfwound or groundround-wound or flatwound, so ground.

String is not the same string – or is it?

In general, the difference between the strings coming from different manufacturers is in the strength of the materials used. In each case, the proportion of core and winding in the overall diameter plays a major role, because this results in the number of windings. This ratio is very important for the later sound of the strings and thus also the guitar. In addition, it depends on the alloy used. The relationship between winding and core as well as the materials also defines the rigidity of the strings and the resulting feel.

Round and square strings?

Heard right, because guitar strings are actually differentiated between round and square. While most strings used to have a round core as their base, today mainly hexagonal cores are used. A round core has the advantage that it allows a tighter winding, yet has a hexagonal shaped core significantly more support. In the worst case, however, this can have a negative effect on the durability of the strings – especially if the production quality leaves something to be desired. If you are dealing with strings that do not rely on a round core shape, you can assume that they are dealing with strings that have a hexagonal core. It is important that the strings are always kept fresh. This is the only way they respond quickly, with better sound quality and greater dynamics. In this way, the sound possibilities are much larger. In addition, the guitar looks neater and better and also feels good.

Conclusion

String is really not the same string, because they can be significantly different. In particular, the strength of the materials and the number of windings play a major role. However, these are not just external influences, because the sound of a guitar changes accordingly. In addition, the respective differences in handling and stiffness of the strings are noticeable. But when should the strings be changed? Basically, if you play for about an hour a day, the strings should change after two weeks at the latest. If you play one hour a week, it is sufficient to change the strings after two months. If the guitar is played very rarely, it is sufficient to completely change the strings after four months. It should always be remembered that strings are consumables. For this reason, the manufacturers also give no guarantees on strings.
