Essential Oil Counselor

History of essential oils

For a long time, essential oils have been used for many purposes. An exact time, when they were first used, unfortunately, can not be traced. It is clear that in Ayurvedic medicine for many hundreds of years essential oils are used for medical purposes.
Already the Egyptians knew the technique of distillation, the ancient Greeks used oils for medicinal purposes and the Romans loved perfumes and the rich use of perfumes. They also knew the antiseptic effect of certain plants.
Thus, the use of essential oils runs through the next few centuries, during which the process of distillation was perfected, until in the 17th century pharmacists increasingly sold essential oils. Since then, many secrets have been revealed around the extraction and the components of essential oils.
To date, the importance of alternative medicine has not been lost. Essential oils are also used to make solvents and perfumes.

Extraction and processing of essential oils

There are three ways to get essential oil. The most common type is steam distillation, where steam expels oil from the plant, then condenses and then separates from the water.
The so-called cold pressing is used only with citrus oils, while mostly for flower oils the extraction is used, in which by a solvent, the soluble aroma and dyes are dissolved out of the flowers.
The very elaborate and costly Effleurage, as it is known from the novel „The Perfume“, hardly finds application.
Further processing depends entirely on the effect that the essential oil should have. Mostly it remains unchanged, but it can also be concentrated or unwanted ingredients removed. Unfortunately, the extraction of all-natural oils has dropped sharply as synthetic methods are cheaper and more profitable.

Use and application of essential oils

Humans can take advantage of the defense mechanisms of plants, because the antibacterial, antiviral and fungicidal substances, which are extracted from the plant extract, work as efficiently with us humans as with the plant, from which the ethereal oils are won. That incenseis antibacterial, is well known and the smoke has been used for many centuries in natural medicine.
Tea tree and thyme have an antifungal effect, taking Tea tree oilrepresents a universal genius of nature.
Very often, the essential oils of coniferous trees are used to clear the airways. Peppermint is one of the plants whose inhaled ingredients have an expectorant and cough suppressant effect.
Aromas are used in scented candles and massage oils and are used for a wide variety of therapeutic purposes. Well-known is the calming effect of lavender or the stimulating effect of rosemary, which generally has recognition. Where the aphrodisiac effect of, for example, sandalwood is strongly doubted.
Not least in aromatherapy essential oils are used, even if the effect of this therapy from the scientific side is not confirmed. Disorders of well-being – usually of a spiritual nature – can be successfully combated.

What should be considered?

When buying, make sure that the essential oil is 100% pure. That is, it has really been obtained only from the natural plant and not synthetically produced. Furthermore, an oil should never be used neat. Dosage instructions can be found on the instruction leaflet for various applications.
