What exactly is one knee Support and what functions does it have?

A knee Support is a completely surrounding the joint Associationespecially for the knee area. This dressing – or bandage – is used in particular after knee surgery, knee injuries or as a therapeutic measure for knee problems. The bandage has three special functions: it supports the knee joint, protects it against further injury or damage and, as a result of the resulting development of heat, relieves the existing pain.
A knee Support is also useful to prevent disease of the knee joint. The knee joint is one of the most stressed and sensitive joints of the body. The ligaments and tendons ensure the smooth functioning of the knees. Often, excessive pain or misloading causes severe pain in the knee joint, which can be induced on the one hand by physical activity and on the other hand by unilateral stress. Certain groups of people, such as football players or runners, whose sports activities strain the knee joints, should therefore consider the prophylactic wearing a bandage.
Even older people benefit from one knee Support , Many people over the age of 50 complain of wear-related pain in their knees. Due to the supporting effect can also be a well adapted knee Support help to stay mobile.
Heavy obesity and obesity are other causes of discomfort due to stress or discomfort due to wear, which can sometimes cause severe pain.

What materials are used to make knee bandages?

Knee bandages are available in many different models, shapes and colors. Neoprene is one of the most widely used materials for making bandages. This material is particularly suitable for bandages due to its excellent thermal insulation and durable and robust design. Its extensibility adapts optimally to the shape of the joint, is comfortable to wear and easy to clean.
Other materials used to make knee and joint bandages are gauze, jersey, flannel, and knit fabric, which is usually composed of a proportion of cotton and spandex to ensure the mobility and extensibility of the bandage.
In addition to the conventional knee bandages you will find today also magnetic and Kupferkniebandagen.
For these special bandages strong magnets – depending on the model up to 32 magnets – or copper threads as additional heat conductors were incorporated and are supposed to support fast self-healing.

The areas of application of a knee bandage

A knee bandage can be used for three applications: preventive, restorative and therapeutic.
The knee joint is not only exposed to extreme stress during sports or high-performance sports, but is also heavily loaded in normal everyday life. Climbing stairs, riding a bike, spinning fast, bending over, lifting – the situations in which the knee joint can be used daily and possibly damaged by a wrong movement are manifold. Therefore, it is advisable to wear a bandage even without previous illness or existing injury as a prevention.
After serious injury to the knee joint, a restorative bandage usually comes into play. Depending on the severity of the injury, this particular type of bandage severely restricts the mobility of the joint or, if appropriate, restricts the knee completely. Depending on the model, the degree of flexion of the knee joint with the bandage can be specified or adjusted, which is of extreme importance when using these special knee bandages.
The preventive application uses soft, elastic bandages made of neoprene or other stretchy fabrics. They completely surround the knee joint and thus protect against damage or injury.
Therapeutic bandages are prescribed by the doctor for existing diseases of the knee joint in order to support the healing process. Examples of therapeutic bandages would be osteoarthritis of the knee joint, where degenerative cartilaginous tissue degradation results in extremely painful bone-to-bone rubbing, or injury or damage to ligaments, tendons, and meniscus in the affected joint.
In addition to the already mentioned support function, a knee bandage still has some advantages. Tight application puts a slight pressure on the injured joint that reliably reduces existing swelling and pain in the joint. By wearing a bandage after a short time develops a heat development, which has a positive effect on the blood circulation and so massively supports the self-healing.
Since most of the bandages used are made of elastic material, they help the patient to avoid unwanted restraint of the injured knee joint. A protective posture promotes the breakdown of muscles, connective tissue and cartilage and can lead in the worst case to a permanently limited mobility of the knee.

The correct application of a knee bandage. What should be considered when buying?

Of course, for joint bandages to fulfill their therapeutic and analgesic effects, they must be properly adapted and worn correctly.
A bandage should sit properly, that is, it must not be too loose, otherwise the compression effect, the heat development and the supporting effect for pain relief is lost.
However, a bandage must not sit too tight, otherwise there is a risk that the blood supply of the treating joint is severely restricted or even completely pinched off.
Before buying one of the many different models available on the market today, consult with the doctor or therapist being treated. Also a good consultation in a good medical supply store is advisable. This way, a suitable bandage can be specifically selected and perfectly adapted to the knee in the specialist trade. From one of the innumerable „cheap products“, which are offered in places even in large food markets, one should keep rather distance. Many of these cheap bandages are made of inferior material and are only available in a universal size. As a result, they barely protect and support the knee joint and, in the worst case, can even cause damage. Therefore, for the benefit of the joints when buying a knee bandage should rather rely on well-known and well-known companies.
After consultation with the doctor or therapist on how long the bandage should be worn and in which situations and a short time to get used to it, most patients are quickly able to properly donate the bandages themselves. Most models are usually equipped with an easy-to-use Velcro fastener, which greatly facilitates the creation and correct adjustment of the knee bandages.
