Planter Fiberglass Guide

Fiberglass planters are increasingly conquering gardens, terraces, balconies and even living rooms. This noble, particularly resistant and lightweight material meets the highest demands in the field of flower tubs. Fiberglass are compounds made of plastics or synthetic resins and fiberglass mats that provide stability. In particular, synthetic resins such as epoxy resin or polyester resin are used. Frequently also rock components are mixed in. Fiberglass has a good formability, so it is planterin a wide variety of shapes and designs, from round and square shapes to classic amphorae and columnar shapes. The base color of fiberglass is not particularly attractive, so dyes are often added to achieve the different colorations. In addition, fiberglass planters can be individually designed by polishing or a suitable finish. They fit into almost any environment and any ambience.

Advantages and disadvantages of this material

Fiberglass planters have a very low weight. In addition, this material is extremely corrosion and weather resistant as well as frost-proof and UV-resistant. It is particularly durable and impresses with a very good breaking strength and stability. Fiberglass planters are not only a pure decorative object, but also an individual design element for the most diverse areas in the garden or the apartment. When used outdoors, fiberglass planters with good insulation properties can score. Due to their good frost resistance, they can stand outdoors all year round and hibernate easily there. Through different admixtures of rocks can be created a variety of surface structures that can be very similar to conventional terracotta, stone or concrete. Fiberglass flower pots usually have a coating on both the inside and the outside that protects them from moisture. If the planter is not used as a planter, but directly planted, drain holes must be drilled in the ground, which are not present in most products. That’s the only thing that could be considered disadvantageous.

Uncomplicated care

The care of fiberglass planters is relatively easy. Indoors, it is usually sufficient to wipe it occasionally with a damp microfibre or cotton cloth. Outside, larger soiling can usually not be avoided. For example, a green algae coating with a little washing-up liquid and a soft one spongeor a fine brush. However, then all detergent residues must be completely removed. Otherwise, unsightly stains and edges may remain on the fiberglass. Occasionally it can also come to smaller scratches. These can be e.g. easily polish or repair with conventional car paint, car paint or car paint polish.

Planting planters made of fiberglass

If you want to plant planters made of fiberglass for outdoor use, make sure that they are flush with the outer edge of the floor. Ideally, you put them up a bit. Both outside and inside a good drainage of coarse gravel is recommended. Then comes a fleece, the drainage and earthseparates. Then follows the potting soiland finally the appropriate planting. For indoor use lining with foil or the use of a suitable plant liner is useful. The decorative finish is a layer of white shingleon, which looks very decorative and noble.

What else should be considered

When buying, you should make sure that the planter has as small a proportion of rock as possible. If this is too high, the material may become saturated with water and be damaged in frost. A thick drainage layer of gravel not only serves as a drainage, but protects such planters from falling over because they are very light. Even if the planter is to be used as a planter, make sure that it is well filled to build up a counter pressure, because fiberglass works at changing temperatures.
