In many households candles spread an atmospheric and cozy atmosphere, not just for festive occasions. The product range pillar candles is therefore wide-ranging. The various offers differ in height, width, color and shape, as well as in material and price.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of hard paraffin is produced. The candle material melts at 55 degrees and is a by-product of purified petroleum. Stearin is less elastic than paraffin. The vegetable fat is derived from palm oil and has its melting point at 65 degrees. However, environmentalists see the production of stearin ores rather critical, as the cultivation of palm oil precedes the clearing of the rainforest.
There are pillar candles in which paraffin and stearin were mixed. A pure stearin candle must consist of at least 90 percent of this material. For the consumer, this requirement means that herbal candles are more expensive than the variant made of paraffin. Candles made of paraffin or stearin are referred to in the parlance as wax candles.
Limited availability and the most expensive are candles beeswax, They must not contain any admixture of other materials. Typical is their golden yellow color and the fine, honey-like fragrance. On the other hand wax candles burn off odorless. If they are accompanied by an odorant in varying intensity, they are referred to as so-called scented candles.

The manufacturing process of a pillar candle
In order to produce colored candles from white paraffin or stearin, fat-soluble coloring pigments are added to the base materials. This produces colored candles that burn best. However, it is cheaper for manufacturers to wrap the white candles in a colored wax coat. With these products, however, there is a risk that the dyes will affect the burning behavior unpleasant, in which they can clog the wick.
As a rule, industrially manufactured candles are produced in a pressing process. In this case, powdered paraffin is compressed under high pressure in a sleeve. To make wax candles, the liquid material is placed in a rubber mold where it can slowly solidify. This production is called casting. In this way, pure stearin candles are made. Candlesticks must be drawn. The cotton wick is repeatedly dipped into the liquid wax until the individual layers have dried and the desired candle thickness is reached. In order to facilitate the combustion process on the wick, paper fibers are also added to the braided cotton yarns. For optimal burning behavior, the ratio between candle diameter and wick must be right, which requires a lot of experience.

The right use of pillar candles
Consumers recognize from the RAL quality mark of a candle that the product was manufactured from a high-quality material and tested for low-smoke, non-drip burn-off. The more weight a candle has, the longer its burning time. With a candle made of paraffin burn about 7 to 10 grams of wax per hour. A stearin candle burns much slower.
Burning a candle produces pollutants that are released into the room air. But their share is very low, so that from a burning candle no health hazard. If a candle starts to smoke, then a higher particulate matter load develops. In general, after prolonged use of candles, the room should be sufficiently ventilated.
Candles must never burn unattended. In addition, draft is absolutely to be avoided. As protection offers a shapely lantern, which is filled with bird sand. In addition, a candle should have a generous margin of safety against flammable objects and materials. At least 10 centimeters between two burning candles are required. If a candle runs or flickers, it is advisable to extinguish it immediately and cut the wick to 15 millimeters. A candle may not be blown out. To delete the wick is briefly pressed into the hot wax.
