DLP Beamer Guide

Counted DLP projectorA few years ago, they were still among the top-end equipment in the upscale price segment. After a drastic drop in prices, they have now become affordable for almost every household. The special feature of the DLP projectors is the technique with which they project the images. The abbreviation DLP stands for the English term „digital light processing“ and means „digital light modulation“. The light modulation is done by a, as DMD or „Digital Micromirror Device“ designated component that carries up to several million mirrors on its surface, which can be individually controlled by the electronics, that is, tilted. This technique was developed by Texas electronics company Texas Instruments.

DLP projector – that’s how it works

For each pixel, the DMD has its own, independently tiltable mirror. When generating an image, the mirrors are specifically controlled and the light beam is deflected in the direction of the beamer optics. Since the states can only be switched on or off with this technology, as is customary in digital technology, the reproduction of brightness gradations is effected by a rapid pulsation of the mirrors. The impulses follow each other so quickly that the breaks can not be perceived by the human eye. The mirrors of a DLP projector reach a frequency of up to 5,000 tilting movements per minute.
The colors are generated in a DLP projector by a fast rotating color wheel, which can be sequentially projected the three primary colors. For the first devices, the color wheel consisted of the three primary colors. In the recent past, however, more and more DLP projectors have been launched on the market, where the number of color segments of the color wheel has been increased to six or seven. By increasing the number of segments, mixed colors can be displayed more precisely. In addition, professional devices have a colorless segment that improves the light output for displaying white surfaces. Professional PLD projectors for commercial use are equipped with three DMDs. A recommended for the home DLP projector is the Acer P1185 3D SVGA. An even higher resolution for sharper images offers the Acer H6517BD 3D Full HD DLP projector , Both beamer are also directly 3D capable.

The advantages of a DLP projector over a LCD projector

The very high speed of image formation allows projection without afterglow or retouching of the image. For this reason, DLP projectors are very well suited for the projection of 3D films and games. The mirroring technique, for example, prevents the image from burning in computer games and provides a higher contrast with a deep black. Another affordable and also 3D-capable DLP projector for use in your own home is the TW529 DLP projector from BenQ.

Where there is a lot of light, that’s also shadow: The disadvantages of a DLP projector

Since the number of mirrors on the DMD is a fixed size, only optimal quality content is projected, whose resolution does not exceed or fall below a certain level. In all other cases, the image content is scaled, resulting in deterioration of image quality.

Various DLP projectors for the home show slight weaknesses in color reproduction. This applies in particular to the depiction of red and orange shades and green. The defect is caused by the color wheel. Less common is the so-called rainbow effect, which is caused by a too slowly rotating color wheel. With some devices, noticeable flicker may occur when playing different shades of gray.

Thanks to the decline in prices, DLP projectors are no longer reserved for professionals only. The affordable projectors have a very interesting price / performance ratio today. The longer life compensates for the current disadvantage in the price compared to the LCD projectors by far.
