Cubb Guide

Cubb is a wooden skill game for 2-12 players, mostly played outdoors. The game is originally from Scandinavia, but has been enjoying increasing popularity in Germany for some years now. It symbolizes a Viking battle between two opposing armies fighting for a king. With its simple structure and its quickly learned rules can Cubb be played by all ages. In addition to the Cubb set, you only need a flat area in parks, on the beach or in your home garden.

construction

Each kubb game consists of ten basic cubes (kubb is the Swedish word for log), a king, six throwing sticks and mostly four to six perimeter woods. Before the start of the game, a midfield split is staked out, which normally should be 5 X 8 meters wide, but can be varied as you like according to the player’s age and experience. Then two equally strong teams of up to six players are determined, who face each other behind the two narrow ends of the playing field and build five base cuboids at regular intervals in front of him. The king is placed in the middle of the field.

game History

At the beginning of the game, Team A’s players try to knock down the base-bucks of Team B with the throwing-sticks. Then Team B throws their overturned Cubbs in the half of the game of Team A, where they are set up as Feldkubbs again. Team B must now try to hit the Feldkubbs. Only when all Feldkubbs have fallen, team B may aim at the basiskubbs of team A. The more opponents Basiskubbs Team A has hit, the more Feldkubbs have to clear Team B out of the way before they can attack Team Basiskubbs themselves. Once a team has managed to bring down all Cubbs in the opposing half, they may throw on the king. The team that first succeeds in overturning the king wins the game. If a team accidentally hits the king before all Cubbs have fallen in the opposing half, they have lost the game prematurely.

Development of the game

In its present form comes Cubb from Sweden, where the game was rediscovered in the 1990s. A predecessor of the game was already widespread among the Vikings, but fell into oblivion in the following centuries. Whether the Vikings were the authors, however, is unclear, since similar games have been handed down from the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. Since the first World Cup on the Swedish island of Gotland in 1995 Cubb a veritable boom. In addition to the now annual World Cup, numerous national and international tournaments are organized, in which passionate Cubb players can compete in sports competitions. First and foremost Cubb but still a fun for family or friends.

Cubb sets

Cubb is offered in many different variants. Thus, in addition to the standard versions, sets with color-coded Cubbs or special sets for children are available. Also alternative names such as Viking chess, Viking cones or Viking game are in circulation. When buying, attention should be paid to the quality of the wood. Hardwood such as rubber tree has better casting properties than lighter conifer or hardwood species. In addition, it promises a longer durability even under heavy use. The material should also be well finished to avoid splinter injury and damage from hard impact or moisture. Many sets also contain a carrying bag that can be used to conveniently carry the game accessories. If the right set and a suitable underground are found, the game can begin.
