Drain fitting Pop Up Guide

Water is there for washing …

Going to the bathroom is part of most people’s morning ritual. But this is just one of the many opportunities to use the „ceramic department“ in your own home. A quick cleansing is usually done with the flowing water from the fittingHowever, not a few people prefer the variant that sinkto fill for the upcoming cleaning. For this it is then necessary to first close the drain in the pool, for which there are technically different possibilities.

The classic rubber stopper

Flowing water in houses is not for long a matter of course, because until about the year 1900 was usually the mobile washing bowl made of sheet metal standard equipment. In the next few years, the first fixed washbasins made of cast iron and enamelled sheet metal followed and later as a ceramic version. However, until today, the original method has been preserved, to temporarily close the drain in the sink with a rubber stopper. This is usually connected by a filigree chain with the pelvis so that it is not lost. In addition, you can pull the stopper from the drain in a filled pool over this chain, so that the water can drain again.

The modern stopper with lifting technology and drawbar

So around 1970 came the first drain fittings on the market, in which the plug could be conveniently opened and closed by drawbar on the sink fitting. This technique has been developed to this day and is still the standard in many bathroom furnishings. The disadvantage of this system, however, is that it consists of many parts and this mechanism has to be installed and adjusted very complex.

The „pop up plug“ as a compact solution

With the beginning of the 21st century followed by the next generation of the sink plug, which are listed under the name pop up valve, click-lock, push-open washbasin valve or as a clic-clac flap in the trade. Basically, they all work according to the same „pen principle“ for closing and opening. The upper part is inserted into the drainage opening of the sink and then screwed to the lower part. At the bottom can then any standard wasteto be assembled. The two pop-up elements screwed to the washbasin form a mechanical unit in which the closure plug can be alternately closed or opened at the touch of a finger. The plug is resilient and firmly connected to the upper part.

The „Pop Up Version“ and its forms

Other pop-up designs consist of only one component and are attached to the underside of the sink with only a gasket and a threaded nut. Just as with the drawbar system, the Pop Up version has two basically different plug diameters. The smaller version with a diameter of around 40 mm disappears flush when closing in the rosette of the drainage top. The larger version has a diameter of approx. 70 mm and lies in the closed state on the drain rosette. Furthermore, some manufacturers also produce these Pop Up valves in an idiosyncratic design, for example with square printing surfaces.

Where there is light, there is also shadow …

Now, the „pop up closure“ is certainly a compact and practical solution for the sink, but it also includes a few issues. The mechanics require adequate space, which is why the optimum cross-section is no longer available for the water flow. In addition, the functionality of the moving parts, which constantly come into contact with water, dirt and hair, sometimes fail. Thus, the recommendation for this washbasin solution is: With normal use of the bathroom, regular cleaning of the pop up plug and the purchase of a good branded product, for example from Hansgrohe, this system is a good choice.

Here are two well-reviewed product suggestions:

1. Hansgrohe pop-up waste set 11/4 „PUSH-OPEN 50100000: This chromed pop up drain made of brass stands out due to its high-quality workmanship, which justifies the rather high price. The seals are made of good rubber material and thus compensate for many washbasin tolerances without problems. The shapely top part is in open position generously above the top of the drain, so that foam and water can drain away unhindered.

2. Tecuro pop up valve pop-up waste with push-push function: This closure is also a good chrome-plated brass construction, but it can be purchased reasonably priced. In terms of detail quality you have to make a few drawbacks, but if properly installed in a standard sink, the process then also works reliably.
