Mounting foam – versatile work material for the construction site

Under the term assembly foam different foams are summarized, which are used during installation, bonding and filling of prefabricated construction parts. In most cases it is polyurethane-based foam. Different types of mounting foam

One can roughly differentiate between two types of mounting foam: the one-component mounting foam and the two-component construction foam. Most products available in aerosol cans are one-component foam. Its individual components must be mixed with each other by shaking before use of the can to ensure the desired inflation response of the mounting foam after exiting the can. For this purpose, a mixed metal ball is contained in the cans. Since the mounting foam swells better, the more moisture it has available, a wetting of the surfaces to be foamed with a little water is highly recommended.

On the other hand, two-component mounting foam requires no moisture for curing. For the cans, an additional hardener is included, with which the foam must be mixed. Such foams cure much faster and stronger than one-component mounting foam. Therefore, the curing of these two-component mounting foams can be better controlled.

Take care when using mounting foam!

Polyurethane in the cured state is not hazardous to health. But with the use of mounting foam you should still exercise some caution. Device fresh, still soft foam on textiles, it can hardly be removed due to its sticky consistency and leaves permanent stains. Of course, he should not get in touch with skin and mucous membranes. The containers are also under pressure and the propellant gases are usually flammable. Therefore, you should not handle mounting foam near open flames. Reusable dual-use guns must be cleaned with suitable means immediately after use, otherwise the foam cures and renders the nozzles and lines of the tool unusable for further use.

Possible applications for mounting foam

Probably the best known application areas for mounting foam are the installation of windows and the permanent fixing of door frames. Furthermore, construction foam can also be used to fill cavities – even on vehicles or to fill small damaged areas in the building. The possible types of use are very diverse. It should be noted, however, that the cured foam is resistant to moisture, chemicals and solvents, but has no UV stability. Therefore, it should not be used in places exposed to the sun.
