Higher resolution is offered by both electron microscopes, which have been in use since the 1930’s, and modern atomic force microscopes.

– The resolution and the image quality of the lenses
– A high quality electric lighting

The magnification factor of a microscope is not a quality criterion that should be taken into account. Most professional microscopes have a magnification of up to 600x, which is usually sufficient for the majority of usage scenarios. Magnifications over 1200x are not useful with a light microscope, because it reaches its physical limits at these magnifications.
