Whether gymnastics, yoga or Pilates: All these sports activities are not very good on the home carpet. Variant 1: The soft floor mat

Variant 2: The low-jumping mat

The outstanding feature of a low-jumping mat is its low sinking depth. It harmonizes well with demanding sports where many turns happen. Caution: Do not use a fall-off mat (from a child to elementary age) to do gymnastics exercises. The young gymnast could not „penetrate“ into the mat due to its low weight, so that the impact would not or insufficiently dampened.

Variant 3: The floor gymnastics mat

So-called „runners“ with a standard length of six or twelve meters and a width of two meters are considered as floor gymnastics mats. They are generally very thin – the strength is only about 3.5 centimeters. The mats are mainly used in the fields of acrobatics, rhythmic gymnastics and floor gymnastics. In school sports, floor gymnastics mats are often used as covers for soft floor mats – so they ensure the athletes after their jumps a secure position when landing.

What should be considered when buying a training mat (in principle)

Apart from the right variant for the respective need, one must consider a few more points when buying a gym mat – especially for private use:

a) Width: The width of the mat should be determined by two individual parameters: the own body size and the intended application areas. Basically, the broader the mat, the more exercise area is available to the athlete.

b) Thickness: For hard floors, a tendentially thick gym mat is preferable. In general, a thicker mat increases the training comfort.

c) Material: Non-slip and durable materials are advisable. For example, skin-friendly foam is an option.

d) Stability: Only if a mat remains unrolled after unrolling does it provide sufficient stability. So you should not „stand up“ at the ends.

e) Stowability: Finally, it is advisable to choose a gym mat, which can be rolled up easily and stored space-saving.
