Cot advice

The origins of the cedar go back to antiquity and explain the name it still carries today. Because the first folding and transportable beds were needed to take them to the battlefield during the war. For the most part, these camp beds do not serve the restful sleep of the soldiers, but the first care of the injured in the hospitals. And since wars are truly not a modern invention, the ancient Romans and Greeks have already taken collapsible wooden beds into the field. Today we have the choice of a variety of models and materials and besides its military necessity that is cot especially popular as an accessory to camping.

Camp bed vs. air mattress

Quite rustic on straw, Spartan on the sleeping pad, classic on the air mattressor just on the cot – There are many ways to camp while camping or in the open air. The first three mentioned is one thing in common: One lies directly on the ground. Although padded more or less comfortably depending on the selected pad, but still without the spatial distance to the ground, the one cot offers. The latter makes it easier to lie down and get up, shields better from the cold and any moisture from the ground and offers at least in the beginning a protection against insects, spiders, scorpions, rats, mice, snakes and other creepy and crawlies that are on the ground move. The disadvantage, however, is that a cot in most cases has more volume and weight, as for example, an empty air mattress, and thus makes more noticeable in the luggage. Here you have to decide to what extent the higher comfort and greater safety justify the additional luggage. Especially with hiking and camping tours, however, this can be an exclusion criterion for the cot be.

materials

In the past, cots were usually made of teak or ash wood. The former is very robust and weather-resistant. The latter is available almost worldwide and very firm and elastic. Even today you can still find occasional camp beds with racks made of wood. These can be easily repaired, even if something breaks. But they are also much heavier and usually can not be folded as small as their metal counterparts. In addition, wood is more susceptible to damage from moisture, insects, fungus or heat. Therefore, cots today usually consist of racks made of aluminum or steel tube and covers or coverings made of polyester, nylon or PVC. Needless to say, aluminum again has a significant weight advantage over steel pipe.

variants

The frame of a camp bedis usually folded in „U“ or „Z“ shape and is covered with fabric. Some camp beds offer extra comfort, as they are equipped with sun visors or provide a tray on which you can even save something.

Similarly built are the so-called carp loungers. These have however on the feet extra widening, which ensure as a „mud dish“ that the beach chairs do not sink too far in soft, muddy ground. The reason for this is that these special cots have been developed as special equipment for carp anglers.

Also related to the cots are the garden loungers. These are usually not or not so small fold and are available in significantly more materials and variants – plastic, wood, metal, wicker, with or without rollers or skids, etc. – available.

To be followed before and after the purchase

If you want to buy a cot, today has a large selection of models and variants for every need. The most important points to consider are the weight, the packing dimensions, the height and size of the lying surface and the materials used. Of course, an extra large double cot is not as easy and small packable as a narrow single bed and steel tube is particularly resilient, but heavier. A very high cot makes lying and getting up easier, but is for use in one tentwith a very low roof only moderately suitable – if it can be set up at all. So it must be weighed, which properties are most important to each one.

In order to be able to use the cot for as long as possible, in addition to the quality, proper care is of great importance. It is important here to protect the furniture from excessive UV radiation, if possible not to pack it in the moist state and to lubricate all moving parts such as the folding mechanism regularly to keep it supple.
