Awning advisor

On awning is a fabric cover, which is set up by means of steel rods on the motorhome or caravan. This is true so far, but now there are for each purpose a variety of awnings, which have certain advantages and disadvantages for each situation. Whether round, pointed or rectangular: awnings are available in all shapes, colors and materials. But which models are available and for which purposes which model is suitable? Since the overview has not become easy in the meantime, now follows a small overview of the variety, uses and models of the awnings.

Varied selection

Before the election on awning should be thought of, what purpose the desired awning must meet. If the journey often goes to the south, then that should be awning be chosen so that it effectively protects against sun and wind. A simple sun-night would already be enough. For the North, on the other hand, a model makes sense, which prevents strong winds and a lot of water. The awnings differed not only in their appearance, but also in terms of material and quality. Awnings that are waterproof have taped seams that prevent rainwater from getting through the seam holes. In addition, the fabric is reinforced and that awning has a ventilation system. A lightweight travel tent is lightweight, compact and does not burden you too much on the journey. In addition, it can be quickly set up and dismantled. Basically, a distinction is made between models that are wholly and partially drawn. Fully drawn in awnings have the advantage that they guarantee high stability and provide a high space gain. Compared to awnings with fully drawn models much more covered space in front of the caravan. Nevertheless, sub-tents convince because of their weight and their packing dimensions, because they are built and transported faster and cost less. The size of the awning depends on the circulating size of the caravan when the awnings are completely retracted. If the model is partially retracted, the dimensions of the tent are determined by the height of the caravan, its shape, the placement of the entrances and the body length.

Which material is best?

A travel tent must survive some weather. For this reason, the material should also be of high quality. In addition, it is of course an advantage if the awning is portable, holds tight and can breathe well. The quality standard must therefore be very high. Of course, nobody wants to waste too much time on expensive maintenance. In the best case, the fabric is tensile and tear resistant, but can still be washed. Basically, for awnings almost exclusively synthetic fibers are used. The weather resistance and the corresponding color are then created by an additional coating. Often, polyester, a synthetic fiber, is used. Polyester has the advantage that it is weather and lightfast, tear-resistant, insensitive to bacteria and moisture and UV-stable. The only disadvantage is that condensation can form quickly due to the tightness. Nevertheless, polyester is suitable for all areas as a carrier fabric. Polyester fabric, which is PVC-coated, has a particularly high resistance to tearing, is rot-proof and completely impermeable. Since PVC is not breathable, condensation forms quite quickly. If the PVC is equipped with a gloss or matt finish, cleaning the awning becomes child’s play. PVC-coated polyester fabric is often used in the roof area. Another alternative is PU-coated polyester fabric. This is very light, waterproof, easy to clean, permeable to water vapor, and translucent. The material, however, takes a longer time until it finally dries.
