Historical development of the ring cake

First forms for a Gugelhupf originated already at the time of the old Romans. Probably the oldest baking dish of this kind was found during excavations near Vienna. There was no standardized recipe for the Gugelhupf. Just as the Gugelhupf became a status symbol of a middle-class household at the time of the Biedermeier, new variants were created. Depending on the region, financial resources and the occasion, the most varied variants were created. While above all the batter is common, in former times a Gugelhupf was also quite prepared with yeast dough or a biscuit. Even the decoration with dried fruit, powdered sugarand chocolate was possible in a variety of combinations.

The advantages and disadvantages of the individual Gugelhupfformen
