Glass bottle guide

What is glass?
Glass is a material that has been used for many millennia. Its main ingredient is silica, also called quartz. In fine-grained form quartz turns into sand. So glass is mostly made of sand. It also occurs in nature, for example as volcanic glass (obsidian). Glass is not just inorganic silica. There is also organic glass, for example acrylic glass or natural organic glass, amber.

Since when is glass used?
First, humans used naturally occurring glass, such as the obsidian. This material was already used in prehistoric times for the production of arrowheads and knives. The first man-made glass was detected at about the same time in Egypt and Mesopotamia. Finds date chalices and perfume bottles to the time around 1.450 BC. Even then. more than 3,500 years ago, glass bottles were used as packaging material for particularly noble fabrics.

Glass bottles – an ideal packaging
Glass is still popular as a packaging material because it has a number of positive properties:
– It does not corrode and is weather resistant (like ancient finds during excavations
occupy)
– It is tasteless and does not accept any flavors or give any
– It is resistant to most chemicals
– It closes the contents tight against the environment (if the bottle is appropriate

is closed)
– It is cheap to manufacture
– It can be colored almost arbitrarily

If glass bottles have so many advantages why were they on the decline?
This is mainly due to their two negative characteristics:
– Glass bottles are fragile
– Glass bottles have a relatively high weight
That is why they have been replaced by plastic bottles (PET) in many areas. The plastic bottles seemed to be the better packaging material as they are feather-light and almost unbreakable. It took some years before the disadvantages of seemingly so practical PET bottles became apparent:
– they cause garbage that does not rot
– they are made from petroleum of which there are only limited reserves
– they release chemical substances, including plasticizers, to the contents
– they are difficult or impossible to recycle

The comeback of the glass bottle
In some areas, for example in the packaging of Perfume, Beer or wine, glass bottles have always been able to hold their own. This is mainly because glass does not change the content of the bottle either in taste or aroma. But in other industries, too, more glass than packaging has been used in recent years. There are several important reasons for this. Glass is environmentally friendly because it can be recycled. Old bottles are collected, smashed and the pieces can be melted down to new glass in a smelting furnace. This process can be repeated as often as you like. Glass protects the contents better than PET. The evidence for this statement are centuries-old wine bottles, the contents of which were still drinkable. When thinking of wine from a PET bottle on the other hand, most consumers feel a strong reluctance.
Glass has another great advantage. Its main constituent, silicon dioxide or quartz, is abundant almost everywhere in the world, including Germany. This is testified by many glassworks that have been in operation for centuries. Petroleum, from which PET bottles are made, is subject to the vagaries of the world market. Sometimes it is cheap, sometimes expensive, sometimes there is plenty of oil, sometimes the production is throttled.

Decide consciously on glass bottles
When consumers consciously choose glass bottles, they do a great service to the environment. Not only is it made from indigenous raw materials that are available in almost inexhaustible amounts (quartz is the most common mineral in the earth’s crust), its production also requires relatively little energy and only short transport distances. Since you take the relatively small disadvantage of fragility gladly in purchasing. Since glass is made of natural substances, it decays again at the end of its life cycle and does not pollute the environment. It is foreseeable that the meaning of the glass bottle as packaging material will continue to grow in the future.
