Without the time the modern person is lost. Unlike in the past, when the course of the sun and day and night determined our rhythm of life, today clocks set the pace. Clocks at public buildings, at train stations, at church towers and the wrist watch inform about the current time anytime. For hobbyists who want to build their own timepiece, the trade offers a variety of different clockworks. Today it is not only possible for professional watchmakers to produce an appealing watch themselves. The range of movements smells of simple battery powered clockwork to amazingly complicated movements with pendulum or chain hoist. Also unusual movements, such as for the construction of a cuckoo clock are available today.

Mechanically driven movements

Movements with a mechanical drive include spring clockworks, pendulum clockworks and pulley or chain hoists.
In mechanical movements, the potential energy stored in a spring or the weights of the rope or chain hoist is released slowly and in a controlled manner. Through the gears of the movement, the energy is converted into a rotational movement of the pointer axes. The essential components of a mechanical movement are the drive device with the associated energy storage such as spring or weights, the gear train or gear, the indicator with the hands and a few other special components such as escapement and restlessness.
The pendulum clockworks also store energy in springs or weights. The pendulum or rotary pendulum therefore does not serve the drive, but to the clocking of the clockwork. By changing the distance of the weight on a pendulum, the speed of movement of the movement can be influenced. If the weight is farther from the pivot point of the pendulum, it works clockwork slower and vice versa.

Electrically driven movements

The simple battery-powered watch movements may take several minutes each day, depending on the model and manufacturer. Accurate are battery-powered movements with a quartz control. The very fast vibrations of the quartz allow a very accurate time measurement. The accuracy of a quartz movement is therefore usually very good.
Even more accurate are the radio movements. These movements have a small receiver for receiving the time signal of a long-wave transmitter. Such a transmitter is located in Germany, for example, in Mainflingen near Frankfurt am Main. Depending on clockwork the time is adjusted with the time signal every hour or even once a day. In the so-called main clocks at German stations, however, the synchronization takes place every minute. In the case of a radio movement, the changeover from summer to winter time and vice versa is also automatic.

The transmission of a clockwork

Both in a purely mechanical clock and in an electrically driven clockwork a more or less complicated transmission does its job. In the transmission are also the differences in the quality of a clockwork. In most very cheap, battery-powered movements, the gears and other gear parts are usually made of plastic. These are mass products that, although they match each other, are not coordinated. This explains the often quite large inaccuracy of the movements. If you are a battery powered clockwork would like to use, then you should buy a radio movement. In these movements an imprecise transmission plays only a minor role.

If you want to enjoy your self-made watch for a long time, or if you want to equip an existing watch with a good and reliable new movement, you should pay attention to the quality and accuracy of the new movement, even though these movements might cost a bit more than others.
