Fruit picker guide

Every year in late summer, when the foliage slowly begins to change color, the harvest season begins. When fruits such as apples, pears and plums have once again fueled a lot of sunshine, it is time to pick them up from the tree and process them into cakes or compotes. However, if you wait too long with the harvest, you risk losing the fruit from the tree and using birds. The ideal helper for a quick fruit harvest is the fruit picker , It allows the easy removal of small and large fruits, without having to climb on branches and ladders.

What is it? fruit picker and what should be considered?

A simple one fruit picker consists of a long handle, a bag (catch bag) and a round ring with tines (picking crown). Depending on the design, the handle is made of wood, plastic or lightweight aluminum. The picking crown consists either of simple plastic, of glass fiber reinforced plastic or coated metal. The distance between the tines depends on the type of fruit, for the harvest of the fruit picker is used. Narrow distances up to one centimeter are suitable for harvesting fruits such as cherries, mirabelles and plums. At longer intervals, the harvest of apples and pears goes well from the hand. The bag of the fruit picker should be removable and made of cotton. It is easy to wash in the machine if it is soiled by crushed fruit.

The trade offers fruit picker as well as inexpensive complete models, which consist of a wooden handle with firmly connected catcher, as well as an attachment for common garden systems of Gardena, Fiskars or WOLF-Garten. The disadvantage of cheap fruit pickers is often their durability. Since all parts are firmly connected, the entire fruit picker must be replaced if the handle or bag is damaged. On garden system attachments such as the WOLF-Garten multi-star fruit picker with joint RG-M, however, each part can be replaced individually. In addition, models such as the Fiskars Quick Fit picker also have a joint on the picking head. The ability to adjust the angle of inclination of the fruit picker makes harvesting even easier. For the harvesting of tall trees, a fruit picker with extendible telescopic pole is also recommended. With these models even fruits in four or five meters height can still be reached comfortably.

How a fruit picker works

Harvesting with the fruit picker is easy and back-friendly and easily possible for young and old. When harvesting, the fruit picker approaches a fruit and maneuvers its stalk between the tines. With a slight jerk or – if available at the fruit picker – the integrated knife, the fruit can be separated from the branch and falls into the catch bag. Models with an integrated knife, such as the Gardena 3110-20 CS fruit picker, have the advantage that they do not require pulling to break off branches. Depending on the size of the bag and the fruits, several pieces of fruit can be removed at once. After that, the bag is in a bucketemptied and the harvest can continue.

Special fruit pickers and harvesters

In addition to the classic fruit pickers with bag, there are harvest helpers, which are equipped with a gripper arm. They make it possible to grasp individual fruits and, as with an extended arm, remove them from the tree. But what if some of the fruit is already on the ground? In this case, a fruit collector such as the Gardena Rollensammler 03108-20 can be used. With him, the fallen fruit is back-friendly „run over“ and collected in the basket. Subsequently, the collecting container can be easily emptied. Another peculiarity in the field of fruit pickers is the berry picker or berry comb. He „combs“ fruits such as blueberries, currants or gooseberries just from the bush.
