The temperature in living rooms is an important feel-good criterion for us. If the temperature is too high or too low, we are not feeling well and may even get sick. In addition, it usually costs a lot of energy to air conditioning living rooms if necessary. Even in well-insulated homes, windows are one of the biggest weaknesses in maintaining indoor temperature. This means that heat can penetrate and escape easily. This fact significantly influences the temperature both in summer and in winter, and in some cases can lead to enormous energy costs due to the necessity of heating or cooling with heaters, electric heaters or air conditioning systems. Therefore, it is particularly useful to counteract this problem and especially to improve the relatively poor insulation of the windows. For this purpose were thermal curtains developed. These are curtains that are made of extra thick fabric, which significantly reduce the heat exchange on windows and thus help to maintain a pleasant room climate without additional energy costs.

As thermal curtains act and what matters

Thermal curtains do not differ visually from normal curtains. They are available in different colors and patterns, which allow you to find a suitable model for any interior. After all, curtains are primarily a piece of furniture in which the visual impact is very important. The most important difference is the substance from which thermal curtains are made. This is often felty, but in any case very thick and, above all, very tightly woven. The materials commonly used have a weight of over 200 g / m² to almost 400 g / m². As a result, they have very good properties as a heat insulator. It should be understood that the thicker the fabric, the better the insulating properties. But not only the thickness is of great importance, but also the dimensions. As the air cools between the drawn curtain and the window, it gradually sinks until it reaches the sill or the floor. As a result, a curtain that extends at least to below the window sill will better prevent this cooled air from entering the room, further improving thermal insulation. Due to the high density and the resulting high weight especially the bracket must be given more attention. While ordinary curtains are comparatively light and can be exchanged at existing brackets, which is at a thermal curtainnot necessarily the case. Especially in an old building with particularly high ceilings, the curtain must be very long. As a result, a large and long curtain of thick felt can weigh 1.5 kg. This is a significantly higher load and it should be carefully tested whether the bracket holds the weight and whether it is sturdy enough anchored in the masonry. Another advantage of extra thick fabrics is that they are opaque and allow it to be undisturbed and unobserved in the evening when the light is switched on.

Which model is ideal?

The ideal thermal curtain does not exist, just different good models that have proven themselves in tests. However, there is also the possibility to buy fabric from the roll and to sew curtains with relatively little effort. This requires some skill and, depending on the chosen fabric, a powerful one sewing machineHowever, it is sometimes possible to save a lot of money on expensive, already finished curtains. If one does not trust this, one is of course dependent on purchased models. In any case, care should be taken to ensure that the fabric matches the rest of the interior of the room and may harmonize with other colors. If the device is to be changed, then the, possibly quite new, thermal curtains continue to be used instead of having to be exchanged as well. If finished thermal curtains should be purchased, different models should be compared to find the best thermal curtain for your own home.
