Grave Light Guide

An ancient custom: the Eternal Light

In every Catholic and Orthodox Church there are always luminous lights placed among the Catholics in the immediate vicinity of the Tabernacle and in Orthodox churches in front of the iconostasis. These lights indicate the presence of God, worshiped by Catholic Christians in the Host and Orthodox believers in the icon. In Catholic churches, these candles are traditionally in red vessels. It’s called „Eternal Light“.
The tradition goes back to the year 400 AD and was brought to Europe by the Orthodox Church from the Middle East in the 13th century. Already in the 5th century it was customary among Christians to set up lights in front of altars and on the tombs of the martyrs.
But also in the Jewish synagogues eternal light can be found. They burn in front of the Torah shrine.

Rituals: important for the collective sense of belonging and the psyche of the individual

The term ritual is an action that is usually regulated, formal and solemn and characterized by rich gestures and high symbolic content. Rituals can be religious or profane. They create closeness and commonality and provide orientation in phases of upheaval. Very often, therefore, one meets so-called transitional rituals. Where two phases of life clash with the end and the beginning, transitional rituals are in the cycle: confirmation, youth consecration, graduation ceremonies, bachelor parties, hen party, wedding, and many more are examples of celebrating transitional rituals.
Especially important are rituals at funerals, whether they are ecclesiastical or secular. Death is such a dramatic experience that the accompanying rituals have a helpful role in coping with the event and the work of mourning.

A nice custom: the erection of grave lights

Especially in Catholic areas, it is customary on All Saints (1 November) and All Souls (2 November) to decorate the graves of the deceased with grave lights, which are modeled in form and color of the above-stated „Eternal Light“.
More and more often you can see these lights at memorials, such as. Accident sites or places with other tragic events. The candles burn to a memory and a sign of the bond with the deceased.
Traditionally, grave lights are available in a red, transparent plastic container with a gold-colored lid. In addition to the red models, white sheaths are also available. The containers and lids are made of weatherproof material. The wax mass is usually white and consists of a mixture of paraffin with vegetable oil. It burns about 52 hours. These grave lights are standardized and can be placed alone or in special grave lanterns.
Even with the grave lights, the trend is towards modern LED lighting. The LED modules produce a deceptively real candle flickering. Compared to the Komponetzeneternzen LED grave lights have a much longer burn time. Besides, that needs grave light At the end of its life not to be thrown away, it is sufficient to change the battery and the lamp lights up. Another advantage over the traditional wax candle is clean burning, LED candles do not russify and there are no wax spots. Alternatively, LED grave lights with solar panel in the lid are offered. Even with these models flickers the „flame“ authentic. At nightfall, the light turns on automatically, if the switchable twilight control is activated. Depending on the duration of sunshine and the associated charging capacity such a solar lights up grave candleall night.
