Curved TV Guide

Curved TVs are the latest trend for home cinema and are well on their way to replacing flat screens. The concave displays promise a more intense TV experience, in which images appear more spacious even without additional 3D glasses. The reason is that the curved shape of the Curved TV the visual habits of the human eye is closer than a flat display. The high 4K resolution should also make films appear more detailed and realistic and draw viewers into the action, so to speak. Here is the idea of Curved TV not new. Already in the year 1952 the first curved cinema screen was presented in New York with the „Cinerama“. Until the first affordable Curved TV but it should take over 60 years for the living room.

The advantages of Curved TV

The curved displays, according to their manufacturers, have several advantages over flat panel TVs. In addition to a greater perception of width and depth of Curved TVs the same contrast and color loss that comes with conventional devices on the edges. Finally, the concave shape provides the viewer with an expanded field of view. This results in the curved TV screen appearing larger than it actually is, with the same screen diagonal. After all, all these improvements make for movie enjoyment in home theater, which almost matches that of a real movie theater.

Another advantage of Curved TVs is their high resolution. All newer curved screen devices support 4K or Ultra HD resolution. With that offers Curved TV four times more pixels than a TV set with Full HD resolution. The difference can be seen at first glance, provided that the input material is rotated in 4K. Corresponding UHD Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray playerare already available in stores. Contents that are available in Full HD or HD, the Curved-TV up to the 4K resolution high, so even here a difference is recognizable. Further content is provided by VoD services such as Amazon and Netflix. The two vendors have already begun to stream first movies and series in 4K. To get a smooth picture, however, a fast internet connection from 50 Mbit / s upwards is needed.

Thanks to the higher resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), the sofastand closer to the device with a Curved TV. If a 55-inch TV with Full HD required at least a 2-meter distance between the TV and the sofa, a 55-inch curved TV such as the Samsung UE55JU6550 would already have a range of 1 to 1.30 meters. Despite the reduced seating distance, there are no single pixels visible that spoil the movie experience.

This applies to Curved TVs

In order to benefit from the advantages of a Curved TV, the viewer should sit exactly in front of the device. Of course this is not always the case. Especially at movie evenings with friends, it may therefore be that left and right outside sitting persons feel the curved shape as disturbing and perceive contrast and color loss at the edges. Here’s the simple formula: The more viewers, the bigger the display should be. Even with distances of 3 and more meters between TV and sofa, a larger screen diagonal makes sense. Recommended are devices from 65 inches, such as the Samsung UE65JS8500T Curved TV.

When choosing a curved device, the choice is finally between the display technologies LED, LCD and OLED. LCD display work with liquid crystals that are controlled by electrical impulses. They require a backlight, which can lead to less than satisfactory black levels. LED TVs that work with LEDs do not need them and can therefore be made flatter. The result: better black levels and lower power consumption. However, the future of Curved TVs is the OLED („Organic Light Emitting Diode“). This technology combines the worlds of plasma and LCD and convinces with a very broad color spectrum, intense contrasts and outstanding black levels. Curved TVs with OLED like the LG 55EG9109 are still more expensive than models with other display technologies, but represent a sensible investment in the future.

Practical additional functions

The remaining equipment of Curved TVs depends on the individual needs of the user. Many of the devices are so-called smart TVs, can be connected to the local WLAN and contain apps such as games, news and video portals. In addition, some Curved TVs are 3D capable and can play 3D content from 3D Blu-rays, for example. An example of this is the Sony KD55S8005CBAEP UHD TV.
