Car charger for mobile phone guide

Whether as navigation deviceto stream your favorite music or just to make a phone call – that Smartphonehas long since become the indispensable companion in the car. However, mobile phones have a limited battery life. Especially if many functions of the smartphone such as Bluetooth, GPS or the mobile Internet connection are active at the same time, the battery is empty within a few hours. In order to prevent the smartphone from suddenly stopping the service, it is advisable to take along a special car charging cable on longer car rides.

12 volt socket becomes USB charging station

Most new cars are factory-equipped with one or more USB ports. These make it possible to connect the smartphone to the car’s entertainment system and to power the battery in parallel. This is not the case with older vehicles. Here is another solution to find, to charge the smartphone on longer trips. In many used older model year, but also in some new cars, there is a front 12-volt socket (formerly place of the cigarette lighter). With a special car charger cable, this socket can be used to charge smartphones and other devices with a USB port.

Car charging cables consist of a plug that fits exactly into the 12-volt socket of the car. When buying, consumers should resort to a charger with status LED. Because charging cables like that of Wicked Chili indicate via this LED whether they are correctly connected to the socket and that current is flowing. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes the cables are too loose or the contacts in the vehicle are „worn out“ by the cigarette lighter. Depending on the model, the charging plug on the back is equipped with one, two or three USB sockets. A USB cable connects the plug to the device to be charged. For smartphones, this is usually a USB to micro USB cable. The latter is by no means included with every car charger in the set. In general, however, every common USB charging cable works.

smartphones, MP3 playerand charge tablets

Basically, car charger cables are suitable for charging all devices that are usually charged via USB. So apart from smartphones, this also applies to MP3 players, tablets and even action cams. However, there are differences in the speed at which car chargers can charge a battery. Here it is worth to take a close look at the information about the charging current. This is given in amps (A) or milliamperes (mA) and allows an estimate of how long the charging process lasts and for which device the car charger is suitable at all.

The batteries of modern smartphones have a capacity of 2 to 4Ah (ampere hours), with tablets it is often even 12Ah. To power a smart phone in a reasonable amount of time, the car charger should provide at least 1000mA (1A). At least 2A is recommended for charging a tablet. If the charging current is too low, it may happen that the charging process does not even start on the device.

Fast Chargers shorten the charging process

In order to recharge the batteries of smartphones, tablets and other devices in a shorter time, some manufacturers offer fast-charging devices for the car. They do not differ visually from other chargers, but offer a higher charging current such as that anchorPowerDrive 2 with 2 USB ports. The car charger offers a charging current of 4.8A with only one connected device. When both ports are used in parallel for charging, the charging current is still 2.4A per port. When buying it is worthwhile to pay attention to the description of the manufacturer. Many advertise their car chargers with the maximum charging current, but this is spread over the available ports. An example: A charger is advertised with 7.2A and has three USB ports. However, these each provide a maximum of 2.4A – even when connecting only one device.
