Polishing sponge guide

What is a polishing sponge?

Of the polishing sponge is an accessory of polisherand is thus used to polish different surfaces. The use of the polishing sponge ranges from polishing weathered or matt paints to finishing work on grinding sites, processing small scratches and removing holograms. Holograms are micro-scratches that run in different directions and are best seen in direct sunlight. This may be due, among other things, to incorrect polishes (such as coarse polishes, improper polishing hoods), mechanical cleaners, or polishing the paint surface without prior cleaning.
The following surfaces are differentiated among polishing sponges:
1. Smooth surface
2. Waffled / ragged structure with anti-hologram effect
3. wave / wave structure to improve the polish effect
4. honeycomb structure for a better polish effect
While the smooth surface is the prototype, the textured and waffled ones are newer forms of surface. Although they are usually more expensive, but also bring some advantages, including removing and preventing holograms. In addition, they keep the polish better in the spongeand do not spray them so much. This leads to a reduction of surface heating.

What types of polishing sponges are there and what are they used for?

Basically, the form of use of the polishing sponge depends on its density and hardness.
Here, a distinction is made between three varieties:
1. Soft / very soft polishing sponge: This is ideal for sealing prepared surfaces and for waxing.
2. Medium hard polishing sponge: The medium hard polishing sponge is used for the treatment of less oxidized and weathered surfaces with a polish or abrasive pasteused.
3. Solid polishing sponge: For repolishing the grinding points after a paint repair and for treating oxidized surfaces and the weathering of tarnished paints with the grinding paste.

Types of fixing for polishing sponges:

1. Velcro / Velcro: This is the most common way of attaching the polishing sponge to the polishing pad, which is then attached to the polishing machine with an M14 thread. The Velcro is divided into the following variations:
– Velcro in the same size as the polishing sponge: This variation is used the most. The Velcro fabric is just as big as the back of the polishing sponge. The polishing plate, however, may also be smaller under certain circumstances. Of the polishing sponge is mounted centered.
– Smaller Velcro: Here, the manufacturer sets the size of the polishing plate in the foreground, which can lead to scratches when tilting the polishing sponge / polishing machine.
– In the polishing sponge embedded Velcro: Here the polishing plate fits exactly on the Velcro. This ensures use of the optimum size of the polishing plate. This leads to a better protection against scratches, since the polishing plate is no longer in contact with the paint. In addition, the recessed Velcro is edged with rubber, which provides additional protection.
– Velcro with a centered hole: Here’s the polishing sponge in the middle a hole, which fits from the diameter to that of the centering rod. This in turn is used for insertion in a hole in the middle of the polishing plate. Once the polishing sponge has been attached to the polishing plate, the centering rod can be removed again. This variation results in the polishing sponge being perfectly centered.
2. Smartdrive adapter: This adapter is screwed to the polishing machine with an M14 thread. The Smartdrive Adapter centers and fastens the polishing sponge with a small twist in a fast and vibration-free manner.
3. M14 thread: In this variation, the polishing sponge is glued directly onto the polishing plate. This ensures a centered attachment and also saves the extra velcro.
