MTB shoes guide

What are MTB shoes?
The Masai Barefoot Technoloy (MTB) is officially translated as Massai Barefoot. She has also become known under the label Swiss Masai. It is the brand name of a shoe series that is characterized by its special shoe bottom construction. It is a rounded shape of the shoe sole, which is curved in the direction of outward arching. Adapted to the heel, a soft tissue made of foamed material was purposely inserted into the shoe. It keeps the bottom of the shoe soft, so that the foot can not find any support in the movement with MTB shoes. As a result, other muscle groups are claimed. According to the manufacturer, wearing the shoes improves the ability to coordinate as other areas of the skeletal muscle are integrated.

How are the MTB shoes come about?
The engineer Karl Müller from Switzerland suffered for years under severe back pain. During a longer stay in Asia, he noticed that the symptoms improved when walking on soft ground. As a result, he initially developed a shoe for himself that could balance the hardness and unevenness of the floor. Regardless, African Masai athletes showed off a marathon with special shoes. Out of financial need, they had their shoes off car tiremade, also with round shapes. However, there is no evidence to this day that the Swiss Karl Müller knew about these shoes. The first MBT shoes were produced in 1999. In today’s fourth generation, they have received a more pleasing appearance and a different heel. Until 2006, the marketing concept was geared to the health effectiveness of the shoes. Then Karl Müller left the company. After bankruptcy in 2012, an investor from Asia acquired important divisions. The trademark rights and patents have now been awarded to the new owner.

What is the effectiveness of MBT shoes?
After shoe studies, the MBT shoes are now not only controversial because of their shape. Also sports medical studies have shown that the coordination could not be improved. However, wearing the MBT shoes will result in warm feet at low ambient temperatures. This effect is apparently due to a higher activity of the leg muscles. Since walking with MTB shoes must be done properly, their use is taught by trained personnel, because the unfamiliar posture requires smaller steps at a higher frequency. The shoes are only suitable for a level surface. A potential danger exists on forest soils.

What is to be considered?
The foamed material of the soft heel part can absorb moisture in rain or snow. The structure of the sole does not tolerate aggressive substances. Even contact with blood, salt, protein, fat or fertilizer should be avoided. Care is provided by conventional means.
