440 Greenwood Road Stanley Smokler's sculptures give new meaning to recycled materials. Through the use of discards from our industrial society, he models three-dimensional assemblage sculptures. These compositions investigate sculptural elements such as balance, rhythm, symmetry, or negative space. His goal in working with students is to give an opportunity for creative artistic self-expression without fear of failure. Residencies begin by investigating the vocabulary of sculpture and how three-dimensional art differs from two-dimensional art. Different styles and methods of sculpture (collage, construction, relief, assemblage) are discussed and projects are determined depending on what recycled materials are available. Students work either in a group or individually in building a sculpture. In schools having a technical program, automotive, welding, and/or woodshop facilities could be used. Non-core group students may work with clay to develop a two-dimensional idea into a three-dimensional object. Suitable for grades 7-12 Education/Experience: BFA, University of Pittsburgh; MFA, The Pratt Institute; many years working as a professional artist; teaching experience for ages 8-18 in a creative arts center; residency experience.
