Colvin "Atiba" Fields
Atiba Music

41 Second Avenue
Claymont, DE 19703
302/798-5827

A residency with Atiba and the Christina River Steel Band presents the colorful origins of Caribbean culture and music through hands-on experiences with the steel drum and other instruments reflecting the music and people of Trinidad and Tobago. Students learn how the actual construction of a musical instrument from a 55-gallon steel drum involves principles of geometry and physics to hammer notes into the concave-shaped surface and tune these notes to a 440 concert pitch.

Extemporaneous singing associated with calypso, a look at the geography and culture of the Caribbean, as well as African and Caribbean dances are all included. A performance by Atiba and the Christina River Steel Band is an integral part of each residency.

As an educator, Atiba has conducted countless residencies and school performances throughout Delaware, consulted the University of Delaware steel band, and directed the Adult Steel Drum Ensemble at the Center for Creative Arts in Hockessin, Delaware.

Atiba has performed nationally and internationally, and his work experience includes concert performances, cruise ships tours, and recording.

Suitable for grades 6-12

Education/Experience: Atiba Fields was trained at a private school for academics and music and has been performing the music of his native Trinidad all his life. Members of the Christina River Steel Band include: Mark Titus, Mark Kirby, and Gregory Murray.
