3171 Penn Estates Carrie and Jesús of ¡Cubanana! teach the vibrant music, dance, culture and language of Cuba in an interactive format adaptable to levels K-16. Students take a cultural and artistic journey to Cuba while enjoying hands-on opportunities, such as singing syncopated rhythms, playing percussion, dancing, and practicing Cuban expressions. ¡Cubanana! offers a selection of interdisciplinary assemblies and residency programs which address the national standards for music, dance, and foreign language education, and promote cross-cultural understanding. Each program presents aspects of Cuban culture, the multicultural roots of Cuban music, various genres, folkloric instruments, popular dances, and elements of the Cuban dialect and lexicon. ¡Cubanana! provides supplementary curriculum materials for use by classroom teachers to further develop skills and concepts. Residencies often culminate with a student performance. Programs adaptable to grades K-16 Education: Carrie Lavender: Masters in the Teaching of Spanish, Columbia Teachers College; Latin music, Harbor Conservatory; music and dance in Cuba; NYC voice, dance, and theatre training. Jesús Alvarez Bulté: Degree in voice, upright bass, Centro de Superación (Guantánamo, Cuba). Professional Experience: Carrie Lavender: many years as foreign language teacher here and abroad, ¡Cubanana!, Grupo Latino Son (Colombian folkloric music), Dance Theatre in Westchester (ballet and character dance), appearances on 3 national soap operas. Instruments: voice, guitar, recorder, minor percussion, bongo. Jesús Alvarez Bulté: 18 years touring with 2 Cuban bands: Grupo Frontera and Septeto Típico Guantanamero, ¡Cubanana!, Grupo Latino Son (Colombian folkloric music), Enrique López Ensemble, Music Teacher at the School of Early Childhood and Elementary Education (Guantánamo, Cuba), award-winning and hit songwriter, conducted school workshops on folk music in his native Guantánamo province. Expert in the roots of Cuban son: nengón, kiribá, regina, and changüí genres. Instruments: voice, guitar, tres, upright bass, charango, major & minor percussion.
