The arts can make a real difference in our lives and our
society — that's the power and promise of the arts! The stronger and more prepared we are as individuals and
organizations, the easier it is to make that difference.
Are you ready to explore the potential of the arts? The speakers and
workshops at the 2011 Arts Summit will provide the tools and knowledge to
become more adept at advocacy, marketing, handling crises, building boards,
reaching new audiences, and making arts experiences more meaningful. By realizing and sharing the full power and promise of the arts in our
communities, there is a ripple effect that provides an opportunity to shape
the future of the entire state.
Welcoming arts organization staff, board, and volunteers;
artists; program planners; educators; arts patrons; and state
and community leaders; this year's Summit brings a regional and
national perspective of the arts to Delaware at a time when many aren't
able to attend regional or national conferences. We are proud to present
recognized professionals representing a variety of timely and topical sessions
across many disciplines. Time is also provided to gather with arts colleagues
to meet, exchange ideas, and make new contacts.

|
Derrick N. Ashong
As an artist, advocate, and activist,
Derrick Ashong is literally the voice of a new generation. Whether heard on the radio, or in the eloquent expression of his thoughts on Sen. Barack Obama as seen in one of the most-viewed YouTube videos of 2008, in his music as leader of the emerging band Soulfège, or acting in Steven Spielberg's Amistad, the Harvard-educated talent has found myriad ways to inspire, engage, and activate young people with positive messages for social change. He will discuss the impact of arts education, his belief that artistry is the most profound form of communication, and the power of content that inspires people to do something good in their lives.

Thomas L. Birch
National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA)
Tom Birch serves as NASAA's legislative counsel representing the state arts agencies on Capitol Hill and the interests of artists and arts organizations, directing advocacy efforts, and advising state and local groups on advocacy and lobbying strategies. He will share his experience on how to make the case for the arts in an environment where local and state officials, as well as private contributors, are beset by funding shortages. He'll include how you can position the arts as an economic recovery asset and an essential part of community life in hard times.
