GOVERNOR'S AWARDS FOR THE ARTS
2004
Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts
Delaware Center for the Contemporary
Arts (DCCA) celebrates in 2004 its 25th anniversary of bringing contemporary art, ideas, and dialogue to
the region. Over 30 exhibitions of regionally and nationally known artists are presented every year in its 33,000
square foot facility. Complementing its exhibition space, the Center includes 26 working artist studios
representing virtually every medium and experience level among local artists. The DCCA allocates 50% of its
resources to community outreach with such programs as Contemporary Connections, its Visual Arts
Residency Program, and a third now in development: Outside In.
The award-winning Contemporary Connections program places artists in classrooms to collaborate with
core subject teachers—teaching, for example, math through interdisciplinary art-based projects. The
Visual Arts Residency Program joins artists and community groups in the creation of thought-provoking
projects, as when cancer patients from the Wellness Center used pinhole photography to express their
experiences.
Neil Watson, Executive Director of DCCA, is proud to receive the Governor's Arts Award: “We are indebted
to the support and enthusiasm of so many Delaware residents—as founders, members, patrons, program
participants, and ardent supporters of contemporary art. This state has so much to offer culturally, and we are
proud to be a part of that.”
