What is a 3D printer?

This is because it’s not ink on paper, but plastic that is printed on a substrate – creating objects. But what does that mean in detail?

This means that in 3D printing a three-dimensional structure is built up from plastic or other materials. This is done layer by layer and more or less quickly depending on the printer model, size and complexity of the desired 3D print. A good 3D printer, suitable filament and software are required for 3D printing.

By the way, the filament can consist of different materials in 3D printing. In most cases, however, the printing material consists of thin threads made of ABS (a mixture of plastics). In addition to the different types of material used in 3D printing, we will come back later in this 3D printer review with some more details.

These threads are usually wound on a spool and can be inserted like an ink cartridge into a common printer, a 3D printer. For this reason, filament, which belongs to the accessories of 3D printers, can sometimes be found in the same assortment or in the same departments as ink or toner cartridges.

In 3D printing itself, on the other hand, different layering techniques and thus printing techniques are used. Most of today’s and today’s commercial equipment relies on Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication – but no matter which process is involved, today’s layer fusion processes are always used to achieve the desired print result.

In addition, the software plays an extremely important role for the 3D printer – unlike other known printer types. The software used for printing with an inkjet or laser printer is not even remotely comparable to the software needed for 3D printing. In most cases, computer-intensive CAD programs are required, which are only partly supplied by the printer manufacturers.

Basically, however, the desired model to be printed is created in advance with the help of CAD software – some of it can be found today on the Internet, in trade journals and the like. but also models that only need to be opened with the software.

Finally, the 3D printer brings the workpiece displayed or created in the CAD program to life – by bringing it into a tangible and usable form.

How does a 3D printer work?

Described in detail, the filament is drawn by thread from a small motor into the print head and melted. The molten material is then applied through a nozzle on a plexiglass plate – layer by layer, until the desired workpiece is produced. However, even with the most modern 3D printer, it usually takes several hours before a complex workpiece is finished. In addition, the 3D printer, regardless of which model is available today, is still limited to one color per print – even if the filament is now available in several colors. Nevertheless, today’s modern 3D printers are preferred for printing a wide variety of plastic objects. You can print things such as tools, toys, decorative items and even things such as cell phone cases or dishes.

In addition to the 3D printer and matching filament, all that is required for printing are suitable software and a suitable print model. This must either be created on the PC itself using the CAD software, or a suitable model must be available. Today, however, already existing structures and objects can also be scanned by means of a 3D scan and thus printed in any color and sometimes also size. In addition, the World Wide Web now includes many communities dedicated to 3D printing, offering advice and help with the use and setup of the 3D printer as well as various templates. However, not only the use of the 3D printer is a small hurdle for many new users. Even the purchase of a 3D printer today is not just like that and without numerous questions that arise.
